Will Smith's Oscars slap has the Academy "upset and outraged," and they will take appropriate action

Chris Rock was slapped on stage by Will Smith in response to his making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.

Los Angeles: Hollywood star Will Smith's behavior during the 2022 Oscars ceremony, during which he smacked actor-comedian Chris Rock on stage, has been condemned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In a letter to Academy members, AMPAS CEO Dawn Hudson and President David Rubin promised that the organization will take "necessary action" about the incident following an official procedure that would take "a few weeks."

"The 94th Academy Awards presentation on Sunday was intended to honor the many members of our community who performed outstanding work this past year. We are disappointed and appalled that those special moments were marred by a nominee's offensive and inappropriate stage behavior.

"To be clear, we reject the behavior judgment displayed by Mr. Smith on Sunday night. As specified in our regulations, the Academy's Board of Governors will now make a judgement on appropriate action for Mr. Smith. This must go through an official process that will take a few weeks, as required by California law respecting members of nonprofit organizations like the Academy, and as outlined in our Standards of Conduct "read the letter.

The incident in which actor Jada Pinkett Smith slapped actor Chris Rock on stage after Rock made fun of her during Sunday's live broadcast of the 94th Academy Awards tarnished the event.

The incident began when Rock, who was on stage to announce the winners for the best documentary feature award, made a tasteless joke about Pinkett-Smith by suggesting that she could star in the "G.I. Jane" sequel, ostensibly in light of the actress's shaved head due to the autoimmune disorder alopecia.

Infuriated, Smith leaped up and struck Rock in the face, shocking both the audience and the ceremony's millions of watchers.

Smith's portrayal of King Richard later earned him the best actor award. In his acceptance speech, he expressed regret to the Oscars' hosts but not to Rock, who had decided not to file a complaint against Smith.

The letter further stated that it will continue to update the members on "any developments, but we also ask that you respect your Board, Academy staff, and the process as this unfolds so it can work in the considered way it was intended and mandated".

The letter concluded, "Please have confidence that the Board of Governors will carry out this process in a manner that is both timely and respectful of all parties concerned while respecting the values of the Academy.

Following the slap gate issue, the Academy immediately denounced Smith's behavior and eventually commissioned an official investigation into the incident, which will go down as one of the most horrific in Oscars history.
