"Thank You For Your Resilience," Chris Rock's apology for the Academy following the Will Smith slap

Chris Rock's comedy tour's opening performance was met with a standing ovation.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued a formal apology to comedian Chris Rock, who was physically assaulted by actor Will Smith on camera at the Oscars and has applauded him for how he handled the incident. When Mr. Rock started making jokes about Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett, the actor stormed on stage and slapped him. Mr. Rock was presenting an Oscar. The Best Documentary Feature candidates and winners were announced by Chris Rock as he continued to host the ceremony. The Academy issued a statement saying, "Mr. Rock, we regret to you for what you endured on our stage and applaud you for your resiliency at that moment," according to the news agency AFP.

Jimmy Kimmel and other late-night chat show hosts, as well as many people on social media, have applauded Chris Rock for being composed and moving on. As his assailant made his way back to his seat, he said, "Will Smith smacked the s**t out of me." "That was the best night on television," he continued.

Will Smith was upset by a joke that Chris Rock made about Jada Pinkett's shaved head; she has alopecia, which causes hair loss. Will Smith was spotted chuckling when Chris Rock made the joke, though. Jada, I love you; I can't wait for GI Jane 2," Mr. Rock said in an off-camera exchange. GI Jane is the name of the role played by Demi Moore in the 1990 film of the same name, in which she sports a buzzcut as a Navy SEAL.

Will Smith swung at Chris Rock before saying, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth," and then he went back to his seat. The next Oscar presentation by rapper Diddy, who promised that the two men would "settle it like family," and the Best Actress award presentation by Anthony Hopkins, which called for "peace," set the tone for the rest of the awards ceremony.

Will Smith won Best Actor shortly after the incident and apologized to the Academy and his fellow candidates in a sad acceptance speech. Later, he specifically apologized to Chris Rock in an Instagram post. The Academy announced in its statement that they are starting disciplinary procedures against Mr. Smith and that he was asked to leave the Oscars after slapping Chris Rock but refused. This won't be enough to clear things up.

Meanwhile, Chris Rock has started a comedy tour that has already sold out due to a spike in demand following Slapgate. The comedian received a standing ovation at his debut performance in Boston and acknowledged that he is "still processing what occurred."

For his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena, in King Richard, Will Smith received the Academy Award for Best Actor.
