The Rajya Sabha has accepted Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's nomination. The seasoned music director has performed more than 20,000 performances over his career, which spans more than five decades. He has written more than 8,500 songs that have appeared in nearly 1,500 films in nine different languages. PM Narendra Modi tweeted his compliments to Ilaiyaraaja, writing, "His works beautifully represent numerous emotions. His life story is equally impressive because he came from poor beginnings and accomplished so much. I'm happy he was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Ilaiyaaraja did have a distinguished career. Hindi music fans are most familiar with Ilaiyaraaja because of his work on the Sridevi and Kamal Hassan film Sadma. Ae Zindagi Galey Laga Le, one of the songs, is regarded as one of his best compositions.

But the maestro has won a lot more awards over his career. Ilayaraja's assistant AR Rahman began his career as a musician. He composed a symphony that was once performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He has won five National Film Awards so far, including two for best background score and three for best music direction.

Since the release of his first Tamil album, Annakkili, in 1976, he has advanced considerably. Thalapathi, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Rajinikanth, featured Rakkamma Kaiyya Thattu by Ilaiyaraaja. In a BBC poll conducted in 2002, it was ranked as the fourth most well-known song in history.

From Agni Natchatriram's Raja Rajadhi Raja, in which he employed just percussion instruments, to Nayakan's eerie Thenpandi Cheemayile, which he sang, Ilaiyaraja's innovations in popular music have been adored by critics and fans alike for almost five decades.

Filmmakers allegedly became so inspired by music that they began commissioning movies based on what they heard. In an interview with The Hindu, he explained this by saying, "Panchu (producer and writer Panchu Arunachalam) had this tendency of stopping over to hear my unused recordings and choosing whatever he liked from it for his projects. He chose one of those six songs and requested it for a movie that was in the process of being made. He adored them and promised to create a plot based on them after I had listened to all six tracks.

He received the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor, in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan two years later. At an event in 2010, he declared, "Music composition is an art," and "Music composition is not just keyboarding. I felt the music and the atmosphere as I composed the background soundtrack for the movie Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, picturing every image, the plot, and how it would be presented on screen. That is composition; when you make something, the director's emotions should be reflected in the music. This occurred during the reign of the Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja."

Additionally, Netflix and Ilaiyaraaja recently worked together on a unique theme for Stranger Things. He is active on Twitter, engaging with his followers and even responding to all of their inquiries.
