No Plans to Include Census on Concurrent List, According to the Government

The concurrent list includes topics that are of interest to the Union and the states equally. On issues on the concurrent list, the state legislatures as well as the Parliament can pass laws.



Union Minister Nityanand Rai stated in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that there are no intentions for the government to put the census on the concurrent list and allow state governments to conduct the census. The Covid-19 pandemic breakout in March 2020 has resulted in an indefinite postponement of the Census 2021 and the associated field activities, according to Rai, Union Minister of State for Home.


Ravikumar D., a DMK MP from Tamil Nadu, asked Rai if there was a plan to make the census a concurrent list and let state governments to conduct it, and if so, what the specifics were. The minister responded when asked if the government will be performing the decadal census enumeration this year: "On March 28, 2019, the Indian Gazette published a notice informing the public of the government's intention to conduct the Census in 2021. The Census 2021 and any associated fieldwork have been delayed as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic ".
