Meet this year's South Asian-origin winners, Riz Ahmed and Joseph Patel, at the Oscars in 2022.

The Long Goodbye, a short film by Riz Ahmed, earned him his first Academy Award.

The 94th Academy Awards have left many of us in a fog in New Delhi. While our hearts were racing to see if any of our top picks won, there was also another kind of thrill. It wasn't too much to ask for some winners from this group, given the quantity of South Asian nominees this year. And we weren't disappointed. In actuality, we have two victors who are of South Asian descent. The actor Riz Ahmed and the producer Joseph Patel were two of the select few who came close to winning the prize. The Long Goodbye won Riz Ahmed an Oscar. Additionally, the documentary Summer of Soul received praise for Joseph Patel.

The actor Riz Ahmed is a British-Pakistani. He received the award for The Long Goodbye, a live-action short film directed by Aneil Karia. Riz is a producer and co-writer of the film. Please take note that this is his first Oscar. The Long Goodbye is based on Riz's corresponding album from last year. In case you didn't know, Aneil also has Indian ancestry. It's time to see Riz Ahmed's acceptance speech at this point. And it said, "In such divisive times, we feel that story's job is to remind us there is no 'we' and 'them'. There is only "we." "This is for everyone who feels like they don't belong," he continued. Anyone who believes they have trapped in the middle of nowhere. It's not just you. There, we'll meet you. The future lies there. Peace." Riz has previously been nominated. He received an Oscar nomination last year for his performance in Sound of Metal as a drummer with hearing loss.

Joseph Patel, on the other hand, is a producer, writer, director, and executive whose family hails from Baroda in Gujarat. He was a co-producer of the Best Documentary Feature-winning full-length documentary film Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). Along with Ascension, Attica, and Flee, the Indian documentary Writing With Fire, which was made by the team of Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, entered the competition. The 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which honored African-American music and culture and promoted Black pride and unity, is the inspiration for Questlove's film Summer of Soul.

And how can we not discuss Priyanka Chopra's pre-Oscar party on Thursday when discussing South Asians at the Oscars? Anjula Acharia, Bela Bajaria, Maneesh K Goyal, Shruti Ganguly, Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani, and Anjula Acharia served as co-hosts of the event for the South Asian Oscar candidates. Priyanka described it as a tremendous honor and stated, "This year's 10 South Asian Oscar nominees will be honor honored at a pre-Oscar party alongside their friends, family, and coworkers who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this all happen. Last night made me feel incredibly sentimental and made me incredibly proud of how far our community has gone. The entertainment industry has a promising future."

Last year's Academy Awards nominations were announced by Priyanka Chopra and her husband, Nick Jonas.
