Football supporters scream "match-fixing" during an odd penalty shootout (VIDEO)

Updated: Jul 19

Ijebu United won the contentious Nigerian shootout 3-0.

Incredibly bizarre penalties in the Ogun State FA Cup final in southwest Nigeria this week triggered allegations of match-fixing.

Both Remo Stars and Ijebu United failed to score during their match, forcing a shootout from 12 yards out to decide the outcome.

The unusual series of spot kicks that followed the full-time whistle has now gone viral, garnering over 7 million views, even though such a minor regional match would typically go ignored.

The goalkeeper didn't even try to make a save on the first eyebrow-raising penalty, remaining fixed to the spot.

A Remo player, however, slammed the ball as hard as he could in the direction of the sidelines on the subsequent kick, as if to surrender a throw-in had the penalty occurred during regular time.

Ijebu United eventually prevailed 3-0 and won the local trophy, but many social media observers who suspected dirty play were unimpressed with their accomplishments.

Ibukun Aluko, who shared the video that went viral, expressed his disgust with the events by writing, "If this isn't match-fixing, then I don't know what it is."

"Why is Nigerian soccer in this situation? Why do we never desire advancement? "He added two broken heart emojis to his question.

Another person objected, saying "They might have done that without making it so blatant." "Why is Nigerian soccer in this situation? Why do we never desire advancement?" He added two broken heart emojis to his question.

It was also noted, "Just see what these gamblers who identified as players have transformed our local league into."

"No, this is crazy. How can we expect to develop when things like these occur? "A different person inquired.

The participants were given the advice, "Everything in our country isn't perfect, at least don't make it look evident," as it was also noted that it is understandable why talented young Nigerians prefer to practice their skills elsewhere.

Later on, though, Aluko claimed to have gotten to the bottom of the terrifying shootout, and his theory seemed much more plausible than throwing the tie.

He said, "I discovered that Remo Stars players purposefully missed their first three penalty kicks and that their goalkeeper also stood still when the opponents took theirs as a sign of protest for the poor officiating in the game.

However, one fan who attended the game disagreed with this.

"I was in the stadium today, and the officials were quite fair. The officials weren't at all biassed, "He answered.

Aluko also stated that he will be speaking with both clubs on his show in the coming future to learn more.
