The singer is a true-blue Bengali at heart and has a vast catalogue of hits to his name, including songs like "Saanson Ki Jarurat Hai Jaise," "Nazar Ke Samne," "Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana," "Ek Ladki Ko Dekha," and "Tujhe Dekha Toh" from the movies "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge," to name The musician has chosen to start a sarvajanik Durga Puja in Mumbai this year in honour of his ancestry.
The Durga Puja celebrations we had as a community with much zeal and joy are the strongest memories we have of our upbringing in Kolkata, the singer recalls in an exclusive interview with Bombay Times.
The much-travelled musician, whose family lives in the US, has travelled widely but has always felt a pull toward his roots in this country. "I have travelled to many various locations throughout the globe, but nowhere have I experienced the same emotions as I had when I was a child. Durga Puja has always been a lavish event and is enthusiastically observed in Kolkata. I have decided to host Durga Puja in Andheri this year to bring the same feelings closer to my hometown of Mumbai. This is for me and others like me who miss the emotions and taste of home, he says.
Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai have always had hundreds of well-known pandals during the festival and we ask Kumar Sanu how will this one be different? “If you want to experience Durga Puja like back in Kolkata, this will be it. Along with a cultural association, and some like-minded youth, we are organizing this puja and our main motto is to promote Bengali arts, culture, and heritage on a grand level. Mumbai may have many Durga Pujas, but this will be different.”
Regarding the unique selling points, he continues, "We will be bringing the traditional celebrations combined with commercial creatives and it will come alive in all its grandeur with giant idols, theme-based pandals, authentic Bengali food, and the iconic Bengali adda. This puja will be available to anyone who wants to take part in the jubilant celebration. It is only fair that I return the love and support of my fans, who have made me everything I am today, by sharing my delight with others through my music, art, and culture. I would adore promoting Bengali heritage, arts, and culture on a global scale.
