Ex-IND batsman perplexed by Dhawan's selection as West Indies ODI captain: "Is Indian cricket in rig

Updated: Jul 19

In ODI and T20 games in Sri Lanka last year, Dhawan served as the team's captain. At 35 years old, he was the oldest skipper of India in the 50-over format.

Shikhar Dhawan will captain the team in three one-day international matches in the West Indies later this month, despite the absence of notable players like all-format leader Rohit Sharma and ace batsman Virat Kohli from the group. In ODI and T20 games in Sri Lanka last year, the seasoned left-handed hitter served as the team's captain. At 35 years old, he was the oldest skipper of India in the 50-over format.

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian batter, is thrilled for Dhawan but concerned about the team having a different skipper in nearly every series. Indian cricket has seen leaders in the roles of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and now Dhawan.

"I wonder if gaining the Indian captaincy has been any easier with so many captains. Are there too many games as a cause of that? Are accidents a factor? Or is it a result of how the workload is managed? Is our Indian cricket's future in good hands? Isn't it possible that we are moving in different ways because different captains will have different philosophies? "Chopra stated on his YouTube page.

Chopra thinks the team needs a stable roster as India searches for the ideal lineup in the run-up to this year's World T20. The team management's strategy also took into account the management of the workload, accidents, and the coronavirus.

"It is crucial for a stable squad to play together for a significant amount of time when preparing for a World Cup. It's not their fault if you keep giving different players a chance; when they succeed. How will some players regain their form if they are tired and out of shape? You should play as much cricket as you can, in my opinion, "Chopra included.

Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in the fifth Test match against England that was postponed, has also been rested and isn't traveling with the other 16 players.

The only ODI matches India will play before the T20 World Cup in Australia are those in the West Indies. After the ODIs, India will take on the West Indies in five Twenty20 Internationals in the Caribbean and the United States. The team for these matches has not yet been revealed.
