EU chastises Taliban for suppression of women's demonstration

On Saturday, Taliban fighters attacked demonstrators participating in a women's "bread, work, and freedom" march in Kabul while firing shots in the air. Women were pursued into surrounding stores where they were shot with rifle butts.

After the country's ruling Taliban forcibly dispersed a women's demonstration, the EU stated on Sunday that it was "especially worried" about the deteriorating situation for women and girls in Afghanistan.

On Saturday, Taliban fighters attacked demonstrators participating in a women's "bread, work, and freedom" march in Kabul while firing shots in the air. Women were pursued into surrounding stores where they were shot with rifle butts.

The violence brought attention to the Taliban's tightening restrictions, particularly on women, since they regained power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, one year ago.

The office of EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell released a statement saying, "The EU is particularly worried by the plight of Afghan women and girls who have seen their freedoms, rights, and access to fundamental services like education being systematically denied."

"The EU reiterates that Afghanistan must respect and protect economic, social, cultural, civil, and political rights, and allow for full, equal, and meaningful representation and involvement of all Afghans in the government of the country," reads a statement from the EU.

UN Security Council resolutions, further emphasized that "Afghanistan must not constitute a security danger to any country."

After the US stated on August 2 that it had assassinated Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul with a drone attack, the Taliban asserted that they were unaware of his presence in Afghanistan.

The EU stated that a "stable, peaceful, and prosperous" nation and the Taliban supporting human rights norms, "in particular the rights of women and girls, children, and minorities," were prerequisites for the bloc to provide basic humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan.
