The party's fundraising efforts have been encouraging as it gears up for the challenging 2022 midterm elections.
Even as the party braces for a hostile midterm climate, the Democratic National Committee, and its joint fundraising arm chalked up another record-breaking fundraising quarter to start 2022, raising more than $42 million over the past three months.
According to a DNC representative, it's the party's highest March total ever during a midterm election year. The figures, which POLITICO was able to obtain ahead of the monthly filing deadline, are a plus for a party that is fighting this fall to hold onto razor-thin margins in the House and Senate.
The DNC highlighted its small-dollar fundraising totals from supporters who donated the organization $200 or less in particular. Over half of the money raised by the DNC in the first quarter came from small donations, with the typical internet donation coming in at $26. The DNC has developed a powerful small-dollar machine in recent years, bringing in enormous quantities of money from individual donors who were especially fervent during the Trump era.
However, significant donor contributions also increased in the first quarter of 2022 as party officials resumed holding more frequent live fundraising events. After the coronavirus epidemic prevented similar gatherings during his first year in office, President Joe Biden gave the keynote address at his first live fundraising event in March. On Thursday, Biden is hosting two fundraisers.
In March, vice president Kamala Harris headlined one event, second gentleman Doug Emhoff headlined two, and first lady Jill Biden headlined three as well. Earlier in the first quarter, Harris and Emhoff, each made further fundraising appearances.
The DNC claimed that it is using this money to invest in midterm preparations: To date, the committee has committed and given state parties $48 million, as opposed to the $30 million it spent over the whole 2018 election season. Additionally, it is investing $25 million in voter registration, protection, and education.
