Detained Sena MP Varsha Raut, Sanjay Raut's wife, is called in by the ED in a money-laundering case.

Sanjay Raut's ED detention has been extended by a Mumbai court until August 8. The court remarked that the ED has made "amazing progress" in the probe while extending the custody.

In a money laundering investigation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday called Varsha Raut, the wife of Shiv Sena politician Sanjay Raut. After certain transactions on Varsha's account came to light, summonses were issued. The investigation agency has stayed mum over the scheduled date of questioning, though.

In connection with the alleged financial irregularities in the reconstruction of Patra "Chawl" (old row tenement) in suburban Goregaon and linked financial property transactions involving his wife and accused friends, the ED detained the Sena MP on Sunday night.

Sanjay Raut's ED detention has been extended by a Mumbai court until August 8. The judge remarked that the ED had made "amazing progress" in the inquiry while extending custody.

Earlier, the ED had testified in court that Raut and his family had earned "proceeds of crime" of more than Rs 1 crore that were the result of purported irregularities in the housing rehabilitation project. The Shiv Sena head Uddhav Thackeray is good friends with the 60-year-old Rajya Sabha member. Additionally, he serves as the party's chief spokesperson and executive editor of the party's mouthpiece, "Saamana."

Sanjay Raut, meantime, said today in a Mumbai special court that while in their custody, the central agency confined him in a chamber without a window or ventilation. Raut shared this with MG Deshpande, a judge in a special court assigned to hear cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Raut said that he had no specific complaints against the ED when the judge questioned him about them throughout the hearing. He did, however, note that there is no window or ventilation in the area where he is being held. The court then asked the investigation agency for an explanation.

In his appearance on behalf of the ED, special public prosecutor Hiten Venegaokar said that because Raut was held in an air-conditioned chamber without a window. Later, Raut said that even though the AC system was installed, he was unable to utilise it because of his health. He will subsequently be placed in a room with adequate ventilation, the ED promised the court.
