Detective Chief | Crystal meth worth a record $1.1 billion is seized by Australian authorities.

According to investigators, three individuals were detained after 1,649 pounds of the narcotic were discovered early this month concealed in 24 containers that arrived at Port Botany.

Authorities have made the largest-ever seizure of methamphetamine in Australia, discovering 2 U.S. tonnes of the narcotic concealed in marble tiles that had been trafficked from the Middle East to Sydney.

According to investigators, three individuals were detained after 1,649 pounds of the narcotic were discovered early this month concealed in 24 containers that arrived at Port Botany.

19 containers that landed at the same port last week included a further 2,337 pounds of meth. All of the drugs were transported from the United Arab Emirates and were concealed using the same technique.

Police put the street worth of the meth at $1.1 billion, which is reflective of the greater amounts Australians pay for illegal drugs than do users in many other comparable nations.

Detective Chief Supt. John Watson of the police called the amount of meth "staggering."

Many high-, mid-, and lower-level suppliers "will feel this seizure for weeks to come," Watson added.
