Chief of staff| RNC's chief of staff will resign.

Richard Walters, the chief of staff for more than four years, will now serve as a senior adviser.

Richard Walters, the chief of staff for the Republican National Committee, told his colleagues Monday morning that he is resigning from his position.

Walters has held the position for four and a half years, making him the committee's chief of staff with the longest tenure ever. According to a source familiar with the situation, his resignation will take effect on Friday following the conclusion of the RNC's annual winter meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.3

Mike Reed, a veteran RNC employee who has had a number of positions since joining the committee in 2017, will take the place of the 32-year-old Walters, according to the source familiar with the change. Reed, 37, was appointed deputy chief of staff following the 2020 presidential election.

Walters will continue to work for the committee full-time and support party chair Ronna McDaniel as a senior adviser. He will concentrate on election-related issues in that capacity, including getting ready for the GOP national convention, the primary debates, and the party nomination process.

The move has long been anticipated. At the request of the party leadership, Walters opted to stay on longer to assist with the leadership transition even though he had previously stated in private that he intended to depart the committee after the 2020 campaign. At that time, Reed was covertly being prepared to succeed as chief of staff.

Walters began working for the RNC in 2013 as a finance representative before becoming the chief of staff in 2017.

"Richard is greatly appreciated by the Republican Party, our committee members, our staff, and myself. In a statement, McDaniel stated that Richard has done an outstanding job of bolstering and constructing our party, from record-breaking fundraising to our cutting-edge data operation and all in between.

She continued, "I am happy that Mike Reed will serve as the new chief of staff to assist implement the party's strategy for victory in November, while Richard is staying on the team to supervise the long-term planning of the RNC.
