He will be running for office alongside Melanie Stansbury in New Mexico's upcoming special election.
The scope of Doug Emhoff's work is becoming more political.
According to two sources with knowledge of the preparations, the second man will travel to New Mexico to campaign with Melanie Stansbury, a Democratic candidate for Congress, ahead of the special election on Tuesday. The ceremony will happen on Thursday, according to a representative of the administration.
Deb Haaland resigned from her position as representative for New Mexico's 1st District after President Joe Biden appointed her to be the Interior secretary. Additionally, the trip takes place shortly after the president recommended Stansbury for the position. Democrats are thought to have a good chance of winning the seat because Biden won it by 23 points in 2020.
Melanie Stansbury "has fought for Albuquerque her entire career as a scientist and state representative who works on land, water, and community concerns," Biden said in a statement on Tuesday. "I am proud to support Melanie for Congress because I know she has the grit and commitment to get the job done for all New Mexicans," said the supporter.
Emhoff attended DNC Chair Jaime Harrison's inaugural online fundraiser in March, so this won't be her first political gathering. But this is his first political event since the election in November.
Emhoff has experience on the trail. After joining the Biden ticket, he participated in solo events throughout the general election. He was an important part of Vice President Kamala Harris' primary campaign.
Emhoff has spent most of his time acting as the second gentleman when the administration sends him to events about the pandemic, neighborhood businesses that have been severely impacted by the economic slump, and promoting the president's infrastructure plan.
