Brazilian Police Arrest Boca Juniors Supporters for Racist Insults

The Public Security Department of Sao Paulo said on Wednesday that three Boca Juniors supporters were detained for using racial epithets following their Copa Libertadores match against Corinthians of Brazil that ended in a scoreless tie.

Two visiting Juniors fans were captured on camera acting like monkeys in front of Corinthians supporters during the tournament's round of 16 encounters, and a third was caught doing the Nazi salute.

The Public Security Department said in a statement cited by the local media that the three individuals arrested, two for the racial slur and one for racism, were being kept in prison.

On Wednesday, Corinthians posted a statement to their Twitter account saying, "Corinthians vehemently repudiate the racist activities that implicated Argentine fans at the Neo Quimica Arena this Tuesday."

These actions won't be accepted, it says.

According to the club, "Corinthians will keep filing timely complaints until it is no longer required, according to their tradition of battle."

The second leg of the round of 16 between the two teams will take place in Argentina on July 5.
