Chinese leader | Biden, who is debating tariffs, will speak with Xi soon.

As he contemplates whether to waive some tariffs imposed on Chinese imports under the Trump administration, President Joe Biden says he wants to speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping soon.

Delaware's REHOBOTH BEACH (AP) — As he mulls whether to waive some tariffs imposed on Chinese imports during the Trump administration, President Joe Biden said on Saturday that he plans to speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping soon.

While Biden did not specify a potential time for their conversation, he did imply that he was nearing a conclusion regarding the future of the financial sanctions.

Following a bike ride close to his Delaware beach house, Biden briefed the media with the statement, "I'm in the process of making up my mind."

Assistants in national security and economic policy are currently reviewing the United States tariff regime and presenting recommendations to the president.

President Donald Trump put 25% tariffs on imports from China worth billions of dollars. The penalties were enacted to minimize the trade deficit with China and compel them to follow more ethical business practices.

To combat inflation in the US, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen recently urged the removal of some of these levies. Other members of the Biden administration, such as U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, have expressed caution about lowering tariffs in light of China's failure to abide by its commitments to buy American goods.

She stated that while there are "many other weapons at our disposal," she recognized tariffs as "one tool in the economic policy toolbox" that may be used.

In an interview with The Associated Press last month, Tai stated, "What is of the utmost importance for us is to ensure that this medium-term strategic realignment that we know we need to accomplish is something that we can accomplish and that nothing that we do in the short term undermines that larger goal."
