World news headlines | Biden is permitted to leave seclusion

The US president is going back to "public participation and presidential travel" following the second consecutive negative Covid test.

Following the second straight negative Covid-19 test, US President Joe Biden has been given the all-clear to resume "business as usual,” according to White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor on Sunday.

Despite a test coming back negative on Saturday, Biden stayed in isolation out of caution until it was confirmed that he had successfully fought off his "rebound" virus. In O'Connor's Sunday update, the president's test resulted in another rejection.

He will resume his public appearances and presidential travel in safety, O'Connor wrote. Biden took off his mask as he left the White House and informed the media that he was in good health and ready to leave.

Even though the president had had two booster doses and had been fully immunized, he originally tested positive for Covid-19 on July 21. Before testing negative last week, he labored in isolation for five days while having a minor cough and body aches.

Biden tested positive again three days later, though. According to O'Connor, "a small fraction" of Covid-19 patients receiving Pfizer's Paxlovid antiviral drug may have "rebound Covid positive," in which they appear to improve before becoming unwell once more.
