The US president warned his Chinese counterpart that Beijing would suffer severe consequences if it violated the anti-Russian sanctions.
President Joe Biden has acknowledged that he attempted to exert pressure on China early on in the Russia-Ukraine dispute by warning President Xi Jinping that disobeying Western sanctions against Moscow would be a "gigantic mistake."
In an interview with CBS News that aired Sunday night, Biden stated, "I said that if you think that Americans and others will continue to invest in China based on your breaching the sanctions that have been imposed on Russia, I think you're making a big mistake, but that's your decision to make."
When he contacted Xi in March, months after the Chinese president had a meeting with Putin in Beijing on February 8 to discuss the Winter Olympics, Biden repeated that warning. He asserted that his goal was to warn Xi about the serious consequences Beijing would face if it violated the sanctions rather than even thoughts are China.
When questioned about the possibility of a "new, more intricate Cold War," Biden dismissed the idea, even though China and Russia's relations seem to be improving. He claimed that Beijing had partially heeded his warning. So, maybe I shouldn't say much more. "So far, there's no sign they've put forward weaponry or other items that Russia has desired."
Washington and Beijing have, however, had numerous disagreements about Ukraine. China has been a significant consumer of Russian commodities during the conflict, and Chinese authorities have claimed that the US and NATO started the crisis by moving closer to Moscow with their military alliance.
According to Xi, he warned Biden during their call in March that the situation between Russia and Ukraine needed to be resolved as quickly as possible. He refrained from blaming Russia for the crisis and recommended that the US and its allies try to assist Moscow in addressing its security concerns to put a stop to the fighting.
