At the WTA San Jose event, Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is defeated by Daria Kasatkina.

At the WTA San Jose hardcourt tournament on Monday, Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, the defending Wimbledon champion, fell to seventh seed Daria Kasatkina.

In Rybakina's first match following the win of her first major championship, world number 12 Kasatkina won 11 of the last 12 games to defeat her 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Next up for Kasatkina is American Taylor Townsend, who defeated Storm Sanders of Australia 6-1, 6-4 at the US Open hardcourt tuneup competition.

Rybakina, who is rated 23rd, breezed through the first set in 35 minutes, while Kasatkina dominated the last two.

The 2017 US Open runner-up, American Madison Keys, upset Chinese player Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-2 to earn a second-round matchup with Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who fell to Rybakina in the Wimbledon final earlier this month.

If both players win their first-round matches on Tuesday, the four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan Naomi Osaka and the sixth-seeded American Coco Gauff would play one another in the second round.

Former world number one Osaka will compete against Zheng Qinwen of China, while this year's runner-up at the French Open, 18-year-old Gauff, will take on Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina.

Osaka, whose ranking has dropped to 41st, hasn't played since dropping her French Open first-round match. She had injured her right ankle in a warm-up competition in Madrid.
