At least 20 people are killed as a huge explosion hits a mosque in Kabul, according to reports

One Taliban intelligence official told Reuters that the death toll might go up to 35 and that there may be more casualties.

According to many accounts, several people are reportedly dead after a large explosion struck a mosque in the Khair Khana neighborhood of Kabul, Afghanistan, on Wednesday during evening prayers. According to Al Jazeera, which cited an unnamed official, the explosion claimed the lives of at least 20 people.


One Taliban intelligence official told Reuters that the death toll might go up to 35 and that there may be more casualties.


Windows in neighboring buildings were smashed by the tremendous blast. On-call ambulances arrived quickly.


According to Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran, Reuters reported that "a blast happened inside a mosque... the blast involves casualties, but the figures are not yet apparent."


The bomb happened in Kabul's PD 17, Zadran. According to Toews, security troops have arrived in the region.


The informant further said that more people may potentially be killed, including the mosque's Imam. Investigations were ongoing, and intelligence teams were present at the explosion scene.


Several inquiries to other Taliban government officials for confirmation of the death toll received no response.
