In New Delhi: Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie told news agency PTI that she was glad of Marvel Studios for not editing Eternals to acquire distribution licenses in nations like Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar. The same-sex intimate scenes between the characters of Phaistos and Haaz Sleiman had to be cut from the movie for it to be approved for theatrical release in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Oman. Eternals, directed by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, opened in Indian theatres on Friday.
The actress Angelina Jolie, who plays the immortal Thena in the movie, expressed her sorrow for the viewers in the nations where the movie won't be seen by the public because of censorship concerns.
"I feel sorry for them. And I applaud Marvel for standing by those sequences. And I still find it incomprehensible how anyone could not recognize the beauty of that family, that love, and the relationship that Phaistos has... It is foolish of anyone to be offended by it, feel intimidated by it, or not like or respect it "During a Zoom roundtable conversation, Angelina Jolie stated.
The titular tribe, who have been residing on earth for the past 7,000 years, is the focus of Eternals.
The Eternals were created by celestial beings and sent to earth to protect them from their wicked counterparts, the Deviants.
Gemma Chan plays Sersi, Richard Madden plays Ikaris, Salma Hayek plays Ajak, Kumail Nanjiani plays Kingo, Don Lee plays Gilgamesh, Brian Tyree Henry plays PhaistosDrug, Lauren Ridloff plays Makkari, Lia McHugh plays Sprite, and Barry Keoghan plays Drug in the film.
The movie's screenplay was written by Chloe Zhao in collaboration with Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Matthew K Firpo.
Additionally, the director had mentioned talking with Marvel Studios about not censoring any of the movie's scenes.
