A German World Cup champion joins "Erdogan FC"

Mesut Ozil and Istanbul Basaksehir have reached an agreement.

Mesut Ozil, a former player for Arsenal and Germany, has joined Istanbul Basaksehir of Turkey, known as "Erdogan FC" because of their affiliation with Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Despite Ozil calling speculations of the 33-year-old leaving Fenerbahce, Istanbul's cross-town rivals, "false news," last month, an announcement regarding the player's upcoming destination was issued just 29 minutes after he had been released by Fenerbahce.

Ozil left Arsenal to join Fenerbahce in 2021, much to the pleasure of Arsenal supporters like Piers Morgan who had accused the playmaker of being slack despite collecting enormous salaries.

However, a year later, Ozil's Fenerbahce contract was terminated after he initially lost the favor of interim coach Ismail Kartal.

Ozil hasn't played for the club since March 20 as a result of Jorge Jesus' exclusion from the first squad and Kartal's lack of confidence in his physical condition.

According to reports, Ozil's contract with Fenerbahce was canceled by mutual consent. He has now joined the Turkish Super Lig runners-up, who last season finished second to Trabzonspor, who won the league's first championship in 38 years.

The Basaksehir social media accounts revealed Ozil, who has since unfollowed Fenerbahce and is now looking to start fresh at the team known as "Erdogan FC."

Erdogan's photo is displayed at the club's practice facility, and the Basaksehir district is a bastion for his Justice and Development Party, thereby earning Istanbul Basaksehir its moniker.

Ozil, who was raised by Turkish immigrants in Germany, is well-known for his friendship with the Turkish president, who served as best man at Ozil's 2019 wedding.

A meeting between Ozil and Erdogan, along with other German-Turk players Ilkay Gundogan and Cenk Tosun, before the 2018 World Cup sparked controversy in Germany due to Erdogan's alleged anti-German attitudes. Ozil and Erdogan are claimed to have been friends for ten years.

After the German national team performed poorly at the tournament in Russia, Ozil resigned from the team, blaming racism on the media and football officials for using him as a scapegoat for the team's failures.

With 36 games played and nine goals and three assists but no championships, Ozil leaves Fenerbahce.
