Queen Elizabeth news After a seven-decade reign, Queen Elizabeth II passes away at age 96.

As her health deteriorated, the long-reigning queen was put under "medical observation" on Thursday.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. She was the longest-serving British monarch in history with a 70-year reign.

The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Thursday night.

Before this, the Queen's doctors had put her under "medical surveillance" at her home in Scotland's Balmoral Castle after growing worried about her health.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, who was born in 1926, succeeded her father, King George VI, to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25.

She was born to the then-Duke and Duchess of York in Mayfair, central London (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Following the passing of her grandpa, King George V, and the abdication of her uncle, King Edward VIII, in 1936, Elizabeth was elevated to second in line for the throne.

When the Second World War began, the future queen, at 13 years old, was evacuated from the capital. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the British Army's women's division, in 1945 when she was 18 years old and served there until the war's end.

She wed Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Denmark and Greece, in 1947. There are four children left behind by the Queen and her late husband Prince Philip, who passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99: Charles, Prince of Wales, Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. They have eight little ones.
