Actor Matthew McConaughey, 52, has decided not to run for governor of Texas "at this time."

The 52-year-political old's aspirations had sparked excitement in liberal circles, especially among Texas residents outraged by Governor Greg Abbott's signing of a harsh bill outlawing the majority of abortions.

Los Angeles: After months of rumors that he may enter politics, Matthew McConaughey stated Sunday that he will not run for governor of Texas "at this point." The 52-year-political old's aspirations had sparked interest in liberal circles, especially among Texans horrified by Governor Greg Abbott, who had approved a harsh bill outlawing the majority of abortions. The rom-com star turned serious actor stated in a video broadcast online, "As a simple boy born in the small town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership."

"It's a road to reflect on that is both humble and inspiring. Additionally, I've decided not to go down that road at the present "Added him.

In comparison to Beto O'Rourke, the Democratic former presidential candidate who officially entered the campaign earlier this month, polls had indicated that McConaughey would perform better against Abbott.

In the November 2022 election, Abbott is running for a third term. The deadline for nominations is December 13.

Earlier this month, McConaughey informed AFP that a governor's race had "been spoken about. It's a potential route."

The True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club actors have not sworn allegiance to a major party.

He gave his self-description as "aggressively centrist," he continued, adding: "Not because that's where compromise and grey lie... It's a brave space today, in my opinion. It is the domain of criminals."

According to McConaughey in the Sunday video, his reflections on local and federal politics had convinced him that "we have certain things we need to fix; that our politics requires new purpose; that we have splits that need healing."

He promised to devote his time to organizations and enterprises that "provide avenues for others to thrive in life" instead.
