A three-year Master of Science (MSc) degree in medical physics is being offered by the IIT Hyderabad's department of biomedical engineering and physics in conjunction with Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACH&RI). According to the IIT, the program is being introduced to teach future radiation and medical physicists.
The program, which has received approval from the AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board), intends to provide top-notch training for medical physicist specialists in the ideas and methods of using physics in medicine. The program aims to offer clinical orientation for radiation physics, clinical immersion and shadowing, industry/clinical lectures, short-term projects, and a 12-month clinical internship (in the third year). The internship is necessary to be certified.
This program is perfect for BSc students who wish to pursue a career in applied physics for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human diseases and who have physics as one of their major subjects. Candidates with the aforementioned experience can apply directly for admission to IIT Hyderabad. Based on the grades received in the prerequisite degree, the applications will be reviewed. Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of the IITH, commented on the program's relevance to NEP 2020 by saying, "IITH has well-established Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Physics that offer UG, PG, and Ph.D. programs whereby students are resolving numerous healthcare industry difficulties. The MSc (Medical Physics) program at IITH, which is offered in partnership with BIACH&RI, is the third postgraduate program in the healthcare sector at IITH. In keeping with NEP, it offers students "hands-on training in the form of a year-long Clinical internship to make them industry-ready."
